An uninspiring ‘70s house has been transformed into a grand country estate following an extensive makeover by Don Nelson Architecture. The owners wanted to add onto the house, which had a steeply pitched roof. Establishing the right balance between this roof and the flat-roofed addition was challenging but ultimately successful. The solution was to dress up the entire façade, wrapping new curved elements right around the house and pulling them out to accommodate a large extension.
A curved façade wraps around the entrance and garage creating a sense of arrival. The renovation designed by Don Nelson involved a large addition to accommodate all the family living areas. Curves also feature inside, where the curved kitchen bulkhead and skylights are echoed by the shape of the polished rosewood cabinetry in the kitchen and surrounds. Don Nelsons contracted Sydney designer, Lance Dixon to design the kitchen, which follows the curve of the house. It features two islands and is reminiscent of a super yacht. The project also created a new first-floor master suite with balcony and luxurious ensuite and media room.
Other changes to the exterior include an expansive new north-facing terrace with indoor/outdoor flow and a covered alfresco dining area. This features adjustable overhead louvres that allow sunlight to penetrate in winter. “The existing pool was in the right position, and we created an infinity edge to give it a more contemporary look” says Don Nelson.
