Greek Isle Visions
Ideally the location of the section you are going to build on should have a major influence on your home’s layout, orientation and style. Don Nelson knows this and has established a reputation for matching the design of each home to its unique location. The Lake Taupo frontage of the house shown here brings to mind pictures of the Greek Islands and this led Don to follow a Greek theme in the design. The sweeping curved exterior wall and the large curved exterior staircase reinforce the sense of a traditional Greek house nestled against the hillside. Viewing this lakeside site for the first time, Don Nelson almost stepped off the 9 metre high cliff edge . . . but was saved by the client ‘Watch out Don !’.
Wrought iron gates set between plastered columns and walls lead you to large cedar entrance doors which open into a marble-floored foyer. The interior features marbled columns which recall classical Greek architecture. These also serve as recurring places for the up-lights which soften the all-white interior. The house has a high vaulted ceiling while the living areas are stepped to follow the contour of the ground.
The house has three levels. The main living areas are on the top while the bedrooms are on the middle level. Large balconies on both levels allow for relaxed indoor/outdoor living. The rumpus room is on the lower level with direct access to the pool and outdoors.
