In 2003 Don Nelson Architecture won the prestigious ADNZ Design Award for Large-Scale Residential Alterations and Additions for the complete renovation and re-build of a vintage 1940’s house. Again, an outstanding design project which transformed a small very out-of-date property into a substantial landmark home of distinction. The judges were impressed with the seamless blending of the new building with the refurbished existing, saying the creative design produced by Don Nelson provided a thoughtful and sympathetic glimpse of the era’s architecture. The dining room was designed as the nucleus of the house with double-height ceiling and internal Juliet balcony within a fully glazed turret which overlooks the extensive landscaping.
The renovation tripled the size of the house and dramatically changed the appearance. While the curved walls, pillars, chimneys, balconies supported on columns and intricate plasterwork added a sense of grandeur often found in large homes of this era, a subtle Edwardian influence added a romantic ambiance. Several expansive living spaces were provided with indoor-outdoor flow to the walled pool area and luxurious en-suite bathrooms designed for all six upstairs bedrooms.
